when doing my TT conversion, I cut 2 small sections of that pipe and replaced it with short pieces of rubber hose, which made everything fit well. However, in retrospect, I don't recommend doing this since it just adds more locations for potential oil leaks. You're right about the steel pipe allowing the fluid to cool, and replacing it with a shorter rubber hose would be a bad idea. What I would do is use a steel pipe which is surrounded with heat sink fins, this is the norm for drifters, who's PS fluid is put to the extreme test.
